The Research

The Research

Lighthouse Instruction is grounded in research-based learning and education. Most of the educational strategies used in the book, workbook lessons and on the upcoming DVD are based on the work of Robert J. Marzano and Associates. Marzano and his team have identified instructional strategies that influence learning. Most of these strategies are utilized in products from Lighthouse Instruction. From using nonlinguistic representation to note-taking and advance organizers, we use a variety of teaching strategies.

Another research finding that Marzano and Associates uncovered was two Foundational Principles for Learning. The first principle is that students learn in different ways. Lighthouse Instruction addresses the three sensory modalities for incoming stimuli - auditory, kinesthetic, and visual- which are part of the Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) model created by Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder. This means that Lighthouse Instruction is geared toward all learning styles. Our main priority is to give comprehensible input to all students so they can all understand the concepts and processes in our products. The second Foundational Principle that Marzano’s team identified is that students learn in different time frames. Just as some musicians can see a song one time and then play it satisfactorily, others have to work diligently on the piece before it can be performed adequately.

It makes sense that we learn at different rates. Lighthouse Instruction is devoted to all students no matter how fast or slow they may be. The book in Chart Your Course! contains summary pages of the lessons taught. Students can review them again and again. The workbooks are graphically organized so students can use the concepts from them repeatedly. Finally, the upcoming DVD will have chapters that can be viewed as many times as needed until the student feels confident and comfortable with the material.

It is our goal to present a program that can be learned, remembered, and continually used as a guiding tool for a student as they advance through the stages of life.
